Almanac – Giavere
April 25th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is Giavere, the Starkindler, the Lady of the Moon, the Unicorn Maiden, patron of Arts and Sciences and the great spirit of Saronne. Her entry was a long time coming, but I wanted to save it for this scene.
Snow by Night got a couple of reviews. One I mentioned earlier by Ram Lama. The other is by Jande , the author of the graphic novel Aedre’s Firefly. They are both now up on the Extras page.
The Vatican rings a lot of bells…
“Oui, I will face the flames if I must to find my heart”
Great line that could be said by any creative artist.
Gee, that sounds kind of familiar but I simply can’t place it. Must have read something similar somewhere else. ;)
Eh?
Kind of sounds like Athena to me. I don’t know who else it might resemble.
Athena is definitely one of the inspirations. As is Varda of Tolkien’s Valar.
Does the word “Vatican” ring a bell?
Varda… if she actually did anything? I like the idea of retconning her to be an interventionist, frankly; as far as I can remember she was a name on a couple pages at best. Her portfolio was one of the best, but even lamely-sketched Tulkas got more screen time!
Bill: I thought you were referencing a recent Almenac entry or some such.
Varda is also called Elbereth Gilthoniel. So she was often prayed to and was the source of the Phial of Galadriel that Sam used in his struggle against Shelob. Varda was much more active in the Silmarillian. However, you are make a very valid point. Like most women in Tolkien’s mythology, Varda was meant to inspire and motivate others. She was almost on a pedestal. While this might be appropriate for a demigod like Varda, it does make her distant and aloof.
Hopefully, next week we see an entry for these “Twelve Revelations” she shared, and an explication of Enlightenment as it’s used here.
Worldbuilding fascinates me!
