Inspiration in Quebec – Part 2
September 22nd, 2013Continuing with our tour of Quebec, the city that inspired Sherbourg, today Eric and Brittany bring us pictures of some city buildings. You can see plenty of examples of the firewalls that were built between buildings, which were so thick that they usually had chimneys built in. Back in colonial times, when a hearth was the only option you had to heat your house, there were obviously a lot of fires; firewalls were a necessary precaution against losing whole neighborhoods every time a fire broke out. The buildings also have steep roofs and ladders leading up to them, which was necessary during heavy snowfall.
That was my favorite part of Quebec City when I was there. So cool!
