Chapter 15, Page 21
June 26th, 2017Today’s lesson is perspective! Pieter finds perspective crucial in his observations. Is he on the edge of the Theory of Relativity or the Observer Effect? Would he slow down long enough to write down his theories? Only time will tell!
Time will also tell regarding Pieter’s experiment. See for yourself when you vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.
This week I’m in the Netherlands! What can I say, Pieter inspired me. So I’m here to see Amsterdam, one of the great cities of the world. This little nation changed the course of history. I’ll be posting pictures to my Twitter account and to the Snow by Night Facebook page. Follow those if you’d like to come on the journey with me.
“Steel is stronger than iron” = “Mutts are healthier than purebreds.” We see this with dogs and chickens all the time. The pure breeds always seem to break down with health problems, pick up more diseases and die off sooner than the mixed breeds.
Or am I misinterpreting here? Toothy Kit is a biracial sort, after all.
I really like Pieter’s scientific philosophy over Bertrande’s. Bertrande was only about results–what she could do with the product. Pieter is much more interested in the process, with studying something for what it is, rather than what he can make of it. The contrast is very well presented.
Very astute observation! +1
“Steel is stronger than Iron”
I know what it means; it was one of the things in my speech at my own (mixed-race) wedding.
… I like this guy. He’s a proper scientist.
But steel is NOT stronger than diamond or carbon nanowire.
(Or was it nanofiber?)
Depends what you mean by “stronger”. Diamond is hard, but inflexible, and can be broken by shear stress that would not break more elastic steel.
And nanomaterials can probably be made how you need them BUT making them is extremely hard, while steel can be done with relatively simple technology.
Diamond? Carbon nanowhtsitz?
That’s what a racial supremacist and eugenist would say! ;)
It’s one of the themes of this story. Combinations are always more powerful than there parts. This applies to cultures as well.
Unfortunately, it only works if you actually combine the cultures, not just put them next to each other.
The cultures are affecting each other. The Aradians are based on the French Canadians who picked up quite a bit from the nearby native nations. The Liranequois are based off the Iroquois who were picking up things from the European settlers. Toothy Kit herself is mixed race and influenced by both cultures (though she might not admit it… yet).
I loved my time in Amsterdam, enjoy!
He’s an spark alright.
