I thought Native American lasses didn’t often smile, because a smile was a promise to bear the children of the man who saw it?
I’m unfamiliar with that custom. I focused my research on the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) — in particular the Mohawk — of the 1700s. It’s possible that this tradition is from another nation.
