Almanac – Three Sisters
August 27th, 2015Today’s Almanac entry is the Three Sisters, which are maize, beans, and squash. These three plants grow well together and when eaten together give you all the nutrition you need to survive. Maize is missing a couple amino acids which beans provide.
As the entry discusses, the plants thrive in close proximity. The companion planting of the Three Sisters developed by the Native Americans was a brilliant agricultural practice. These three plants supported the growth of their towns and culture from the deserts of the southwest to the seashores of the northeast and everywhere in between.
