Almanac – Punishment

April 26th, 2012

With Laurent in the pillory, it seems a good time to discuss punishment in the Almanac. The pillory (and its close relative the stocks) were a popular form of punishment in colonial times. In a small community like Sherbourg, being put “on display” in the town square was a humiliating and dreadful experience that continues to sting for a long time after you get out of the pillory.

Oh, I have a couple more artists Britt and I met at Pittsburgh Comicon. Wootlabs by Joe Kleinman is a webcomic of a happy family of mad scientists. I love the look and pacing of this comic. Rich Bernatovech of Drumfish Productions is releasing NeverMinds. NeverMinds is the code name for a secret, superhuman organization that offers security and investigation…for a fee. Great stuff!

Almanac – Heavy Cavalry

April 12th, 2012

This week’s Almanac entry is heavy cavalry. These units are the tanks of the colonial period. They hit hard and fast.

Chapter 4 begins on Monday. I would like to welcome Natalie Baaklini to the team. Naty is the artist of Law of the Riverside. She has agreed to become our colorist for the main story and take some of the pressure off of Britt. Thank you, Naty!

Almanac – Line Infantry

April 5th, 2012

This week’s Almanac entry is Line Infantry – the basic building block of the Japethic army. They do the bulk of the fighting and the bulk of the dying. On the battlefields of Japethe, their might is unmatched, but in the forested wilderness of Everique, they are severely hampered.

Diane and I attended VA Comicon last Sunday. It was a fun time and we met a lot of enthusiastic comic fans. We also met a great webcomic creator – Scott Markley. He makes the webcomic Unconscious: the Grim Sleeper, but I also really enjoyed his blog Watching William, which is a sweet and amusing blog about his experiences with his girlfriend’s little boy. Great stuff.

Almanac – Dragoons

March 29th, 2012

This week’s almanac update is dragoons. These multi-purpose military units did it all. They could charge like cavalry, dismount and fight on foot, and roam the countryside as scouts. They were also some of the cruelest units, responsible for collecting supplies and denying supplies to the enemy.

I also made an update to Page 6 of Law of the Riverside. I cut a comment by Ald from the script for space reasons, but Amy (our editor) was quite eloquent in defense of the quip so I’ve added it back in. The page has been updated, and you can find the new comment on panel 1.

Virginia Comicon is this weekend. Diane and I hope to see you there!

Almanac – Carbines

March 22nd, 2012

This week’s Almanac entry is Carbines – the weapon of choice of the dragoon (and therefore Ald). These nifty shortened muskets don’t have the accuracy of the standard musket, but you can use them from horseback and then let them dangle beside you on a hook and ring attached to a rail on the side of the carbine. Yeah, I geek out about stuff like this. This and historical architecture.

We have a convention coming up soon. Virginia Comicon. April 1 in Richmond. We’ll have chapters 1 and 2 as well as a variety of buttons. Brittany is out of town so I’m dragging Diane our Mad Alchemist Webmistress with me. It’s her first time manning the table. So come by and give her a hard time. I’m sure she won’t mind.

Almanac – Muskets

March 15th, 2012

In honor of Ald’s history in the military, this week’s Almanac entry is muskets. Muskets are a necessity in colonial Aradie just like they were in colonial North America. The importance of the musket can be seen by the number of phrases in our language that arose from muskets – lock, stock, and barrel, a flash in the pan, going off half cocked, and drop the hammer.

The Snow by Night team has received an invitation to Intervention on September 21-23 in Rockville, MD. This fabulous convention is a great way to meet a lot of creators of Internet media. It’s not just webcomics. They have a diverse array of guests. I highly recommend coming to check it out.

Almanac – Meddling

March 8th, 2012

This week’s Almanac entry is Meddling. Meddling is a big cultural no-no in Sherbourg. It gets you into fights or dunked in horse troughs.

I am in Nebraska for the week for a family baptism. Brittany will be bringing you our fan art selection on Monday. Until then, have a wonderful weekend.

Cast Page Update

March 1st, 2012

This week’s Almanac entry is an update of the Cast page. We’ve added the fourth member to our crew of main characters. Snow-by-Night takes her place at the top of the page alongside Blaise, Mathilde, and Jassart. Additionally, we’ve revised how the page operates. Instead of having the character description below the profile pictures of the characters, the main characters link to their section of the major character page, while the minor characters link to their section of the minor character page. Diane and I believe this is easier to navigate.

I’ve gotten several more submissions to our Fan Art Rendez-vous. I’m amazed by the talent of our submitting artists. We’re running our rendez-vous throughout March so please send your submissions to me. Britt, Diane, and I would love to see them.
