Almanac – White Tree
October 20th, 2015A bit of a schedule shift this week. Kristin is a bit under the weather and won’t have the page until Friday. So I’m moving the Almanac up to today with an entry on White Tree! This is the capital of Liranequois Confederation. Well, it’s the site of the Grand Council which means it’s the closest thing the Liranequois have to a capital.
White Tree is built around the The Tree of Peace. The real Tree of Peace is actually the origin of the term “burying the hatchet.”
Almanac – Tionnontego
October 13th, 2015Hello everyone.
I’m afraid that I don’t have a page for you today. My artist for the vignette that was supposed to start today did not submit any pages. So that vignette has been indefinitely delayed while I work that out. Into the breech has stepped Kristin Kemper of Sylvania. She has agreed to rush an emergency vignette for me, titled The Peacemaker and the Tree of War. Hurray for Kristin!
We’re hoping to have the first page on Friday. So I’m switching the schedule this week. Almanac today; page on Friday. Today’s Almanac is Tionnontego, the capital of the Kahne’aké nation. If you want to read a page of comic tonight, head on over to Kristin’s comic Sylvania.
No Almanac 10/9/15
October 8th, 2015Hi gang, vignette needs are taking precedence. Pages before everything. My apologies, but there will be no almanac entry tonight. Have a great weekend!
Almanac – Longhouse
October 1st, 2015This week’s Almanac entry is the Longhouse. This is the foundation of the Liranequois society, as it houses the families that make of the clans that are the societal backbone of the culture. They are another amazing example of engineering. Using trees, saplings, and bark, these enormous structures stand tall and long without the use of a single nail.
Since I’m all done shipping out the Kickstarter rewards, I’ve added Volume 2 to the Snow by Night Store. You can now order Volume 2!
As an added bonus, I’m going to have a bundle sale starting as soon as I get the graphics done — probably tomorrow. If you missed out on the Kickstarter, I’m going to offer the Philosopher Tier and Grand Philosopher Tier as a bundle. The Philosopher Tier gives you either Chapters 1 through 4 or Vol2, one 8×10 print and four 4×6 prints. Grand Philosopher gives you Chapters 1 through 4 AND Vol2, as well as the prints. They’ll be $30 and $40 respectively with $6 for shipping domestically. International shipping is … a lot more. Sorry global friends. Mailing paper is pricey. I’ll see about uploading a digital pdf for sale to DriveThru Comics next week.
Almanac – Wisdom
September 24th, 2015This week’s Almanac entry is Wisdom. Not the virtue or the attribute, but the title. The Wisdoms are the greatest of the healers among the Liranequois. Distant Smoke is among their number and Toothy Kit aspires to join their ranks some day.
In Kickstarter news, I’m finished with shipping the books. The last packages are going out tomorrow. Whew! But it’s done. Now all I have left is the French translation of Vol2 and the short story. Thank you again to all of you that helped back the Kickstarter and made this book a reality.
Now that the rewards are shipped, I’ll be adding Vol2 to the Snow by Night store next week. I should run a sale for Vol1 too. I want to finish off the chapter books so that I can reprint those as big, beautiful volumes.
Almanac – Clans of the Liranequois
September 10th, 2015This week’s Almanac is the Clans of the Liranequois. The clans are the family lineages of the Liranequois, each one dating back to a famous female ancestor. Maybe someday I’ll include stories about each of these legendary women, but it’s beyond the scope of the comic at the moment. The women hold the power in the clan, with each clan ruled by a matron. This has caused the Japethan colonists to consider the Liranequois a matriarchy. Which is partially true. We’ll discuss the sachems next week.
I’ve been working with a couple Native American artists for future vignettes and other projects. I would like to include more. If you’re a First Nation artist and interested in doing some freelance work for Snow by Night, please drop me an email at eric (at) snowbynight.com.
Almanac – Nations of the Liranequois
September 3rd, 2015In this week’s Almanac, I discuss the Nations of the Liranequois. Together, these five nations form the Great Longhouse. I’m continuing to draw inspiration from the Haudenosaunee and I am fascinated with the concept of basing the government off the structure of the longhouse. It emphasizes the confederation as a family structure. This is a drastic shift from government as divine right or the three estates that were prevalent in Europe at this time.
Oh, Monday is Labor Day and a holiday. I’ll be out with family. No update on Monday. We’ll be back on Wednesday.
Almanac – Three Sisters
August 27th, 2015Today’s Almanac entry is the Three Sisters, which are maize, beans, and squash. These three plants grow well together and when eaten together give you all the nutrition you need to survive. Maize is missing a couple amino acids which beans provide.
As the entry discusses, the plants thrive in close proximity. The companion planting of the Three Sisters developed by the Native Americans was a brilliant agricultural practice. These three plants supported the growth of their towns and culture from the deserts of the southwest to the seashores of the northeast and everywhere in between.
