Almanac – Language

February 10th, 2012

This week’s Almanac’s entry is a long overdue update to our Language page. I’ve been tossing around all sorts of joual (slang) the past couple of chapters and haven’t updated in months. So please enjoy the new glossary with all the terms defined. I even added in a few new ones to mix. Some of my favorites are Ald’s Hostel, Corned, Nique, and Staircase Wit. I also realized that I meant to use Ayoille on Page 26 instead of Aiyai. I’ve corrected the page.

Almanac – Chugan

January 12th, 2012

This week’s Almanac entry is Chugan, the First Crow. He’s a greedy trickster spirit. Snow-by-Night will have her hands full dealing with him. As he is a character, his entry is also on the Cast page.

Almanac – Father Winter

January 5th, 2012

This week’s Almanac entry is the bio for Father Winter. He first appeared in the vignette Feathers and Frost but he’s back in the main tale. So I thought it was about time for him to get an entry in the Almanac. As this is a character bio, he appears on the Cast page as well.

Oh, great news. Snow by Night is now in the top 50 (#48 at this moment) on Top Web Comics. Thank you everyone who has voted for us. Please vote for Snow by Night daily. Brittany, Diane, and I are so grateful for your support!

Almanac – coureur des bois

December 30th, 2011

This week’s almanac entry is the coureur des bois. These are the independent fur trappers of the Everique wilderness. The trapper who fell in love with Snow-by-Night was one.

Brittany and I are making our schedule for the coming year. If you know of a convention that you think we should attend, please let us know. You can either reply in the comments below, post to our Facebook page, or send me an email. We’ll happily take all suggestions and see what we can do.

Almanac – Voyageurs

December 22nd, 2011

This week’s almanac entry is the Voyageurs of Aradie. These canoe men are the long-haul truckers of the Everique wilderness. They paddle, they carry, then they paddle some more. It’s a life of toil, but it’s a life of breathtaking views and enormous independence. Aradie’s wealth could not exist without them.

In other news, I just got finished sending my payment so Snow by Night has a table at Katsucon February 17-19 at the National Harbor in Maryland. We’ll be in the Artists Alley. Brittany and I will both be attending. We’ll be bringing freshly printed copies of Chapter 2 to join our inventory of Chapter 1.We will also have a good selection of buttons, featuring Brittany’s art and colonial slang. Come say hello!

Almanac – Rendez-vous!

December 15th, 2011

This week’s Almanac entry is the Rendez-vous! The Rendez-vous is the Mardi Gras of Sherbourg. It’s a two week long out-of-control party when the trappers come to town. It’s so huge that it created the Iniquity Row. I particularly like the twisting of real custom for the Promenade. Read all about it in the almanac.

Almanac – Fur Trade

December 8th, 2011

This week’s Almanac entry is the fur trade. Since we’re introducing our trapper in Snow-by-Night’s story, it seemed a good time to talk about the economic foundation of the colony. It’s a fascinating subject. Money just poured through historical French Canada and the trade caused a number of wars between the various tribes of the northeastern woodlands. Our story takes place about a century before the fur trade collapsed so the wealth is there for the taking. This also explains why you have so many rooks, smugglers, and other ne’er-do-wells in Sherbourg.
