Almanac – Knorre
October 16th, 2014I’m on a roll talking about mythic things like manitou and malignant spirits. I thought I’d give some more information about another Great Spirit. Knorre (KNOR-eh. the k is pronounced) is the great spirit of crafting and artifice. He’s also the patron spirit of Kleef. Kleef is the mother country of Meerpelt, where Blaise was headed. What could this possibly mean for our story?
In other news, I was re-lettered A Life So Free. I was never entirely happy with the font I used for Peyre’s letter. It was difficult to read and that’s not good for a webcomic. I changed it to Quahog from Blambot which is what I’m using as the caption font for Chapter 9. It has a good weight to it and its easier to read. Enjoy!
Almanac – Paws-Tread-Lightly
October 9th, 2014This week’s almanac entry is Paws-Tread-Lightly. Our fox spirit is a spirit guide who gives counsel to others while keeping his own for himself. He’s a friend of Snow-by-Night and now an advisor to Blaise.
Almanac – Crow
October 2nd, 2014This week’s Almanac entry is the Crow. With Chugan being center-stage, it seemed like a good time to talk about crows and their spiritual meaning. This one took a good bit of research as crows have different meaning to the different tribes. Also, a lot of my research results kept conflating ravens and crows, which are very different animals. In the end, I pick and chose which legends to use for what suited my needs with this story.
Almanac – Fox
September 25th, 2014We’ve been seeing a lot of Paws-Tread-Lightly in this chapter so I wanted to take some time to talk about foxes in the Almanac. There’s the usual stuff about what foxes are, but I also added in some notes about what the natives believe foxes represent as animal spirits. Paws-Tread-Lightly is a manitou and conforms to those beliefs. For example, Blaise had to ask for help and he offered Paws a gift. He didn’t realize that is what he was doing. But that’s Blaise standard mode of operation.
Almanac – Biscuits and Pemmican
September 18th, 2014This week’s Almanac entry is all about food. Well, pemmican is a food. The biscuits of the 18th century are a food-like object. They are not to be confused with the biscuits of the American South. Those are savory quick breads and have more in common with the scones of the British Islands.
On a different note, I’m planning on doing a Kickstarter for printing Volume 2 later this fall. What sort of rewards would you all be interested in seeing? I’m open to suggestions.
Almanac – Wandering Spirits
September 4th, 2014They flit through the air; they swim through the seas. They’re the Wandering Spirits of Corthis in today’s Almanac.
Diane and Steph are still working on the RSS feed. I swear this code is possessed. Every time we try to fix the feed, the site breaks. Last time, the server name changed on us and we were down for a week. This time, one of our link exchange banners decided to take forever to resolve, which made debugging impossible. So we go that issue resolved (and in only one night. hurray!), but that ate up all the time we had this evening. We’ll try again tomorrow.
Oh, Éloise was interviewed at GenCon by Dwarven Tavern w hile she was manning the Snow by Night table. You can see the interview here. Éloise was definitely one of the catalysts for this story. She may have been part of the inspiration for Mathilde.
Almanac: Malignant Spirits
August 27th, 2014Our second Almanac entry is week covers the Malignant Spirits. These hateful, dangerous, and destructive spirits roam Corthis, looking for victims. They have decimated the native tribes of Everique, much like the epidemics the decimated the First Nations of our world.
One more post to go for this week, and it’s a special update that’s neither almanac nor a page. I hope you will enjoy it.
Almanac – Madeleine Vignerot
August 25th, 2014Our make-up update from last week is the entry for Madeleine Vignerot. She was a renowned humanitarian who funded the construction of the hospital in Sherbourg. A comic page to come tomorrow night.
