Almanac: Vignerot Hospital
August 1st, 2014Hello everyone. Sorry for the delay on the almanac, but we were having server issues last night Today’s Almanac is the Vigenerot Hospital in Sherbourg. This hospital is loosely based upon the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec, the oldest hospital in Canada. You can find a great history of it by Bill Trent in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. For this entry, I enjoyed making Anne-Marie and Michel Sazarrin, my homage to Michel Sarrazin. Maybe someday we’ll do a vignette with these two healers fighting the plague spirit of 1612. I love playing healers in RPGs so the idea of a baroque-era philosopher and habit-wearing cleric kicking evil spirit butt warms my heart.
It’s the first of the month and the votes have reset on Top Web Comics. Please vote for Snow by Night.
Otakon is next weekend. We’ll be there with some new prints. In celebration of the release of Sailor Moon Crystal, Amanda Gomes drew a set of prints for us with Sailor Moon in 18th century naval uniforms with their powers being alchemical based. Here’s a preview of Sailor Moon. We’ll post more sailors next week.
We have this handy map of where to find Snow by Night (featuring me and Diane), Ianua (featuring Julie), and Final Arcanum (featuring Steph). Steph is sharing a table with Ava’s Demon so she’s on the map as well.
Almanac – Snowshoes
July 24th, 2014Our first almanac entry since returning from hiatus is snowshoes! These wonderful creations allow the wearer to walk across snow without sinking by distributing the weight. Snowshoes were an invention of the Native American tribes in the real world, so that fact continues into Corthis as well.
We’ve found a couple issues with the transfer to the new site. The biggest is the RSS feed. It’s still borked. Steph and Diane can’t find the issue that’s causing it to malfunction. We’ll continue working on it.
Almanac – Crimes of Deception
April 24th, 2014This week’s Almanac entry is the Crimes of Deception – Fraud, Perjury, and Slander. Blaise and Jassart are familiar with all three of them. Oddly enough, slander is not a crime in Saronne. The Crown leaves it up to people to protect their own reputation. This might be short sighted as it leads to a lot of violence in the back alleys and duels among the nobles.
Almanac – Ouroboros
April 17th, 2014Just a quick update tonight before AwesomeCon tomorrow. Jose Ortiz did this fantastic version of the ouroboros for us. You can find it on the our Alchemy page.
See you all at AwesomeCon!
Almanac – Crimes of Taxation
April 10th, 2014Smuggling, Tax Evasion, and Guild Evasion! The Crimes of Taxation are the subject of this week’s almanac since Blaise and Jassart are searching the house of known smuggler. Smuggling is more than just avoiding duties. The colonial government puts strict limits on how many furs go out and how much brandy goes in. This keeps the price of furs elevated to where it is profitable. This limitation is one of the most flouted laws in the colony.
Only two more days to vote in the Art Contest! Polls close this Saturday at midnight.
AwesomeCon is next weekend. Diane and I will be there, along with Julie and Amanda of Ianua. In addition to our product, we’re on a couple panels on Creative Collaborations and World Building. Come see us talk about comics, magics, and writing.
Almanac – Crimes of Property
April 3rd, 2014This week’s Almanac entry are the Crimes of Property. Well some of them anyway. I’m covering Burglary, Pick Pocketing, and Robbery this week. They’re all theft, but differ in the means and targets.
Two more days in the final four round of the Art Contest. Get your votes in before Saturday at midnight.
Almanac – Brandy
March 27th, 2014This week’s Almanac entry is Brandy! This potent liquor is an important trade good and a key part of the Fur Trade in Everique. Since this is an alchemical setting, I’m running with the idea that liquor is the spirit of the grain or fruit, released through distillation. So drunkenness is caused by imbibing too much Sophic Mercury. This could have interesting implications for our story.
This round of the Art Contest closes on Saturday at midnight. Get your votes in quickly.
Almanac – Planetary Metals 3
March 21st, 2014This week’s Almanac entry are the final three of the planetary metals – mercury, silver, and gold. These are the three most mysterious and noble of the metals.
Interesting fact. Silver was widely believed to be a barrier to disease in Europe. That is why silver was the metal of choice for plates and tableware. Silver was so ubiquitous in tableware that today utensils are called silverware even when they aren’t made of silver. Modern scientific research is backing up this faith in the value of silver for health. Silver does have some anti-microbial properties. Anti-bacterial creams are better at fighting bacteria, but I can’t eat off of that. Maybe I should go dig out my grandmother’s old silverware and start eating off of that…
Art Contest qualifier round ends Saturday night at midnight. Get your votes in to get your favorite pieces to the next round.
