Chapter 8 Page 26
March 16th, 2014The fire brigade arrives at the burning laboratory on Chapter 8 Page 26. Wooden colonial towns were prepared for fire as it was an ever present danger. We modeled that fire truck of off a working model they have at Williamsburg. To see the colonial fire engine in action, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.
I’m pleased to announce the start of our 2014 Art Contest! We have 11 entries. This first week is the qualifier round. Instead of being paired against each other, for this round all the entires are in a single poll. You can vote for your favorite once a day. On Saturday March 22 at midnight, I’ll close the poll for the qualifier round. The eight submissions with the most votes will then move on to our Elite 8 round and be paired up for voting contests next week. To vote, visit our Art Contest Voting Portal.
Chapter 8 Page 17
February 10th, 2014Blaise makes a hasty exit on Chapter 8 Page 17, as the binding circle collapses in itself with nothing to contain. I’m rather happy with the sound effects on this page. The BZAAAAT took several different layers with masks and opacity to work it in right. To see what’s become of Jassart and Bertrande, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics. We’re in the top 15! Wow. We’ve never been this high before. Our thanks to all of you!
An update on our Art Contest! We’ve decided to adopt a theme for this year’s contest. The theme is Alchemy! Submissions should have at least one Snow by Night NPC and something to do with alchemy. We’re taking a broad view of Alchemy. It can be alchemical theory, processes, the elements, or anything else alchemical related. I’ll even consider astronomy to be part of Alchemy because of the strong influences that the planets have on alchemy. To see what people did last year, check out last year’s Art Contest archive.
Katsucon is this weekend. I’ll be there Friday and Sunday. Brittany will be there all three days. Books, buttons, and prints! Come by and get some merch and wacky conversation.
Brittany and I were interviewed on TGT on Saturday. You can see the interview on YouTube. Brittany is awesome, while I’m showing off my collection of old maps. Kurt, the interviewer, is a great guy and was a lot of fun to talk to.
Father Winter
July 25th, 2013Today’s Almanac update is the final installment of Julie Wright’s four-illustration series, The Spirits of the Seasons with Father Winter. We’ve already met this seasonal spirit twice in the comic. Chances are, he’ll be back. Until then, here’s his poetical introduction.
A howling wind heralds his bleak approach,
and with each soft step, ice and snow encroach,
Burdened by regrets and hopes dead too soon
Lost in memories polished as the moon.
You may notice the wolf beside Father Winter. Is that Malsum? Or as Snow would call him “Daddy’s mean friend.”
The Evensong Bard
July 18th, 2013We continue our tour of the seasons with the Evensong Bard, the spirit of autumn, by Julie Wright.
I hear him calling with the fleeting sun,
His song of ease when the labors are done.
Trees drape him in fading crimson and gold,
While shadows stretch long as the day grows old.
Sun-in-Splendor
July 11th, 2013Hello again! This is Diane, reporting in for update duty while Eric and Brittany are at Connecticon this weekend. In place of the usual Almanac update, we are previewing another of Julie Wright’s wonderful prints! This is Sun-in-Splendor, the spirit of summer. Eric sent me a lovely poem he came up with on the long drive to Connecticon that I thought I’d share alongside the preview:
How bright she burns with eyes like tawny amber
and hair wreathed in a crown of radiant fire.
She chases the sky with leonine grace;
With boundless strength she soars ever higher.
If you like what you see, you can pick up a print of the spirits of the seasons at Otakon 2013 or our other future conventions!
We return on Monday with Page 2 of Chapter 7, which you can take a peek at early by voting for us on Top Web Comics. If you’re at Connecticon this weekend, please swing by and say hello!
Adventures in London
June 27th, 2013Hello, Diane here to bring you the promised silliness in place of Eric’s usual Almanac update! He and Amy have been sending me updates on their adventures in London, which I have jealously illustrated here for you. They went on a double-decker bus tour through London that took them over the Tower Bridge. They weren’t actually still on the bus when they visited the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, or when they crossed St. James’ Park to see Buckingham Palace, but I claim artistic liberty.
I had originally intended to make the animation a bit longer and sillier, but unfortunately I’ve been stranded in bed with a high fever, and I can barely keep awake for more than half an hour at a time. But maybe next week…
While I hope you enjoyed my fun little interlude, we’ll be back to the vignette for Monday’s update. Vote for us on Top Web Comics for a sneak peek!
Almanac – Thérèse de Varennes
May 2nd, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is Thérèse de Varennes, the Oracle of Giavere. As the high priestess at the temple in town, she’s the highest ranking cleric in town. She’s a fairly recent arrival in Sherbourg and was brought her by the express will of Giavere. She’s also as blind as a bat. Don’t worry, Giavere gives her seers second sight so they’re not bumping into things and causing fires.
We got another review! This time by ComicSpectrum. We did pretty well – 4 out 5. Someday I’m going to have to figure out how to get to a 5/5. On a different note, Snow by Night now has a tumblr account! Another artist recommended that we get on tumblr a year ago. It took a year, but we finally got around to it.
Almanac – Giavere
April 25th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is Giavere, the Starkindler, the Lady of the Moon, the Unicorn Maiden, patron of Arts and Sciences and the great spirit of Saronne. Her entry was a long time coming, but I wanted to save it for this scene.
Snow by Night got a couple of reviews. One I mentioned earlier by Ram Lama. The other is by Jande , the author of the graphic novel Aedre’s Firefly. They are both now up on the Extras page.
