Jassart (re)explains his plan to Blaise on Birds of a Feather page 4.  Blaise may be a good charm (lock pick), but his listening comprehension skills leave something to be desired. We had some trouble with our server on Friday and a bit on Saturday. Our host had a bad node and Diane had to flap her arms at them until they fixed it. After some discussion we decided that the server trouble affected all the contestants equally. So we’re going to maintain Saturday at midnight as the end of the Final Four round and proceed from there.

Congratulations to Laura Chilson and Rein Eire. They are moving to the championship round. Winner of this round wins the contest and gets the grand prize. You can vote daily for your favorite.  They are two excellent pieces.

Jassart offers Blaise a golden opportunity on Birds of a Feather page 3. It’s not going to be a legal opportunity, but Jassart is a lying rook. Shazzbaa and Steph did a great job with this page. Today we begin the vignette Birds of a Feather. For this vignette, we’re climbing into the WABAC machine and going back in time. Our destination is Sherbourg two years before current events to see Jassart meeting Blaise and Mathilde for the first time. To see who shows up next, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

This vignette is illustrated by two very talented artists. Shazzbaa of Runewriters is doing the lines while Steph Stober of Final Arcanum is doing the colors. I love their style. It’s perfect for our flashback to skullduggery and adventure.

We return to Bertrande and her reaction to Peyre’s letter in Page 10 of A Life So Free. This concludes the vignette. My thanks to Minuiko for illustrating it. She helped bring the scenes of the voyageurs to life. Thank you for all your hard work. She now joins our ranks of our contributors on our About page.

We will begin posting Chapter 8 on Monday, Dec. 2. It’s titled Of Making and Unmaking and will be picking up right where we left off in Chapter 7. To see a preview of the great cover page that Brittany did for Chapter 8, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

We will not be updating the Almanac on Friday because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Also, this Friday is Native American Heritage Day as the capstone of Native American Heritage Month. Our thanks to the First Nations for being one of the inspirations for Snow by Night.

Peyre meets his end in the icy waters of the Upper Country on page 9 of A Life So Free. Shooting the rapids was a dangerous temptation for the voyageurs. You could either carry your weight in furs and then come back and get the canoe — a process that could take hours of heavy labor. Or you could avoid all of that by shooting the rapids. This week’s SpiderForest webcomic of the week is Kaspall by Lucy Lyall. It’s a long-running (from 2005) mystery comic. A good bit of the supernatural creeps into the story so be ready for thrills and chills.

Peyre speaks to us about the unbridled freedom of the Upper Country in A Life So Free page 7. Think about the Canadiens of the early 1700s. They’ve come to this vast wilderness after leaving a hyper-civilized Europe where everything is controlled, monitored, and prescribed. The forests of Europe are long gone. Every scrap of land is claimed. And then they come here. The North American wilderness must have been intoxicating. It was complete freedom without structure or restriction.

Minuiko did a fantastic job at capturing that feeling with this page. The flying geese above Peyre as he stands as straight and unbent as the pine trees behind him. And to contrast that, we have the woodcuts of Japethan life, bound in squares, with figures bent in servitude. Wonderfully done on this page, Minuiko. This week’s SpiderForest Webcomic of the Week is What It Takes by Kez. This is the story of Colbey, a martial artist who has survived the end of the world.
