August 31st, 2016Snow-by-Night isn’t the only spirit with a mortal body, as Pénélope is ready to face the mundane world on Chapter 13 Page 30. Cienan’s words of warning fall upon deaf ears of her excitement.
This concludes Chapter 13! I won’t be posting on Monday for the Labor Day holiday. So next Wednesday begins the vignette How We Decided You’re People! as Told by Toothy Kit, Wisdom-in-Training. Unlike a lot of the vignettes, this story takes place during the timeline of the main narrative. And if you like Toothy Kit, you’re going to love this vignette. If not, Elk will be around to offer commentary.

Some convention news. We were lucky enough to be invited to the ECCC artist alley in 2017! Wooooooooo! We’ve never done a show on the West Coast before. And I’ve never been to Seattle. So double woooooo!

So this page. I spent a long, long time thinking about this page. It’s subject matter is controversial, and I didn’t want to walk into it lightly. So I talked about it with historians and native artists. I did research. In the end, I decided to include it, because it is setting up important events later in the story.
Also, this practice did happen, and to remove it entirely would be a form of erasure and an embrace of the noble savage stereotype, which I’ve worked hard to avoid. Toothy Kit and Defiant Elk are both protagonists, but they have their flaws. They are grappling with radical cultural change that is upending their way of life.
Finally, I am drawing upon the spiritual reasons why the nations of the northeastern woodlands scalped in the first place. Elk isn’t doing this for a bounty. That would happen in real history as the colonists sought to manipulate the natives for their own gain.

We’re back from GenCon, but I still haven’t recovered yet. We all have a great time, but sleep suffered. We greatly enjoyed our run through True Dungeon. We played some D&D, Dragon Age RPG, Phoenix Dawn Command, and more. We also met a lot of wonderful people who stopped by the table in Author’s Avenue! Thank you everyone who stopped by! We’re looking forward to next year when we’ll have Volume 3 published!
