Why would conquerors seek out a scientist? Help to blow things up, for starters. Or, depending on their strategic plans, poisons, and . . . let’s not go there.

Or they might not be after him for military reasons. It’s quite possible that he’s done something unrelated to irritate them. Publishing a monograph that the authorities ordered burned, packing a cannon past its structural limits in an attempt to put something in orbit, dropping things off a tower into a crowded square, that sort of thing.
