Almanac – Canoes
November 8th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is canoes. One of my favorite outdoor activities is going canoeing. It’s a beautiful way to travel. I grew up on the St. John’s River in north Florida and my father had a canoe. I took that boat everywhere, for miles up and down the river. For our comic, these light watercraft are the backbone of transportation in Aradie. Roads are few and far between. Instead, it’s so much easier to slide these canoes into the rivers and paddle your way through the wilderness.
My apologies for not getting the update up on Wednesday. We should be back on track for next week. Thank you for your patience!
Almanac – Leatherworkers, Smiths, and Woodworkers Guilds
October 24th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry are three more guilds – leatherworkers, smiths, and woodworkers. These three guilds fill out many of the everyday craftsmen and women in Sherbourg. Economics is serious business in the colony with commerce and politics and power all tangled up together.
A Life So Free Page 1
October 22nd, 2013The Chapter 7 vignette is A Life So Free with art by Minuiko. This is the story of Bertrande, who is going to figure prominently in Chapter 8. I hope you enjoy it.
To see a preview of the next page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics. Minuiko did a fabulous job of capturing the imagery of the voyageurs and the Great Lakes.
Don’t forget to check out Stargazer’s Gate when you get a chance.
Almanac – Blazoners and Erudite Guilds
October 17th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry are the two wealthiest guilds in town — the Blazoners’ and the Order of the Erudite. Mathilde made it to Bertrande’s laboratory where we can see the alternate guild marque of the Erudite. Diane has draw the guild marques to accompany the entry.
I’m pleased to announce that we now have digital downloads of Chapters 1 through 4 available in the Snow by Night Store. These are pdfs of the chapter books. When you order them through the store, you’ll get an unique download URL to get the chapter. Diane has tested the pdfs on the Kindle and they work there too.
Finally, Snow by Night will be attending NekoCon next month in Hampton Roads, Virginia. It’s a fun convention and we always have a great time there.
Almanac – Museum of Sherbourg
October 10th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is the Museum of Sherbourg. We haven’t been back to the Museum for a while, but we discussed its sister institution the University of Sherbourg last week. Also, Cienan showed up in this week’s pages and he’s a patron of the museum. He certainly has a habit of showing up in unlikely places.
Almanac – University of Sherbourg
October 3rd, 2013This week’s almanac entry is the University of Sherbourg. I was meaning to upload this one when Blaise visited Antoine in the previous scene, but Québec happened. Turns out it was a good thing. I got a lot more ideas for the almanac while touring the city, including a few for the university. Our university is modeled off of the Séminaire de Quebec, which has a beautiful building.
For the print volume (which would include Chapters 5-8), I’m thinking about including a section on “The Secrets of Corthis” which would discuss many of the secrets that lurk behind the mostly benign entries of the Almanac. These secrets would not have any spoilers, but would shed light on some of the more seedy, secretive, or supernatural aspects of Corthis. Would this be of interest to people?
Almanac – Zollhaven
September 12th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is Zollhaven, the capital of the Kleefish colony of Meerpelt. It’s twice the size of Sherbourg and is growing larger every year.
This weekend, Snow by Night is joining other members of Spider Forest at SPX. If you’re going, please stop by. There will be all sorts of great comics available.
In other news, Brittany and I are heading up to Quebec next week to do some sight-seeing and a lot of research touring. Our little comic is set in a fantasy version of this city so we want to see it up close and in person and take a million pictures. So after we finish up with the scene with Blaise, we’ll be taking a brief hiatus from pages and the almanac. Instead, we’ll be posting pictures of our visit everyday. Join us for our tour of the first city of French Canada. Should be fun!
Almanac – Meerpelt
September 6th, 2013For this week’s Almanac entry, we go south to the great economic rival of Aradie — the colony of Meerpelt. It’s about time I discussed another colony in detail. Meerpelt boasts a wonderful natural harbor and runs the length of Maurits’ River. The Meerpicts have long sided with the Liranequios against the colonists in Aradie and are their economic rivals in the fur trade. Meerpelt is my vision of a New Netherlands that was never taken over by the British. We’ll see more of this colony and its capital of Zollhaven in Volume 3.
Brittany does indeed have a DragonCon report. I’ll include it with Monday’s update.
