Almanac – The Quadrivium
May 30th, 2013In this week’s Almanac entry, we return to the Enlightened Studies to discuss the Quadrivium, which are the next four revelations of Giavere after the Trivium. Fun fact — the Trivium and Quadrivium are drawn directly from the structure of courses at medieval universities. Because the Quadrivium was more advanced, anything minor and easy was learned in the Trivium, making it… trivial.
Etymology is fun.
Almanac – Masons Guild
May 23rd, 2013Hi, everyone! Diane here to bring you the Almanac update while Brittany and Eric are away at Animazement! If you’re attending, make sure to stop by and bother them for me! Say hello and check out Chapters 1-4 for sale and all our other merchandise available. Eric and Brittany would be happy to sign copies for you, if you like. Anyone interested in merchandise who isn’t local can also check out our online Store.
Eric wrote an entry on the Mason’s Guild yesterday before he left, tying into last week’s entry on the Fundament Exchange. There are rumors of some political goings-on behind the scenes that I found intriguing… He forgot to leave me the typical parchment background file, so I had to make do with this, the Mason’s Guild marque.
Also remember that you can vote for us on Top Web Comics daily to see a preview of the next page!
Almanac – Fundament Exchange
May 16th, 2013This week’s almanac entry is the Fundament Exchange. Fundament is ore, pulled from the ground and in its natural state, unchanged by human hands. Many of the investors in the Aradie Trading Company dreamed of riches similar to what the Ilandrians are pulling out of the southern continent of Ascuta. They were sorely disappointed for the wealth of Everique does not glitter like gold.
Next weekend, Brittany and I head down to North Carolina and attend Animazement. Stop by and say hello if you are attending and check out our line up of books, buttons, and prints. Or maybe hire Brittany to do a commission. You can find a map to Artist’s Alley here. We’re booth M24.
Almanac – The Enlightened Studies (part 1)
May 10th, 2013After Wednesday’s page, I wasn’t sure if you all would want to read more about Giavere’s Twelve Revelations, but here is part 1 of the Enlightened Studies. This entry covers the first three revelations of Grammar, Rhetoric, and Logic. These are the foundation of all the Enlightened Studies and almost every child in Saronne learns them under the tutelage of the Seers of Giavere.
You may notice a similarity between the Enlightened Studies and the Liberal Arts. I was pondering if I should just go with Liberal Arts or the Latin version of Artes Liberales. If you trace it back to Latin, it translates to “the pursuits of the free” for these were the skills known by all free men and women in Rome and were considered essential for you to be a functioning citizen. It was what separated them from the slaves who had no education.
Almanac – Thérèse de Varennes
May 2nd, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is Thérèse de Varennes, the Oracle of Giavere. As the high priestess at the temple in town, she’s the highest ranking cleric in town. She’s a fairly recent arrival in Sherbourg and was brought her by the express will of Giavere. She’s also as blind as a bat. Don’t worry, Giavere gives her seers second sight so they’re not bumping into things and causing fires.
We got another review! This time by ComicSpectrum. We did pretty well – 4 out 5. Someday I’m going to have to figure out how to get to a 5/5. On a different note, Snow by Night now has a tumblr account! Another artist recommended that we get on tumblr a year ago. It took a year, but we finally got around to it.
Almanac – Giavere
April 25th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is Giavere, the Starkindler, the Lady of the Moon, the Unicorn Maiden, patron of Arts and Sciences and the great spirit of Saronne. Her entry was a long time coming, but I wanted to save it for this scene.
Snow by Night got a couple of reviews. One I mentioned earlier by Ram Lama. The other is by Jande , the author of the graphic novel Aedre’s Firefly. They are both now up on the Extras page.
Almanac – Ville-Marcelet
April 18th, 2013This week’s Almanac entry is Ville-Marcelet. This wild town is on the very edge of the frontier. Past its walls is the miles and miles of rivers, lakes, and forests of northern Everique. Civilization has a tenuous hold here with the wilderness a few steps outside the door. What? The town reminds you of Old Montréal? Hmmmm, interesting.
In other news, I’m almost done going through all the journal entries that accompany each page and adding Almanac reference links. This was Greg’s suggestion and a good one. I’ll be double-checking my links tomorrow to make sure they’re all working.
Chapter 6 Page 17
April 14th, 2013Almanac Reference: Cachet, Opera, Seigneurie, Ville-Marcelet
Vivienne comes to Blaise’s rescue as he wilts under Cienan’s interrogation on Chapter 6, Page 17. Opera houses in this era were hugely ornate affairs, and Sherbourg’s is no exception. To see Brittany’s fabulous drawing of the grand stair, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.
Diane got all the bookmarks into the Almanac. I’m currently going through and adding in Almanac Reference links to the journal entry for each of the pages. It’s slow going, and I’ve gotten through Chapter 1. I’ll try to have this done by our Wednesday update.
