Winter Fantasy Page 1
June 2nd, 2013Today we begin with page 1 of Winter Fantasy. This vignette is the first to feature a main character. Normally, I use the vignettes to tell stories of side characters, but I wanted to show some of what is going on inside of Blaise’s head at this moment. His head is filled with bubbles and streamers as he delights in his new-found love. With such thoughts, it was only fitting that the vignette be a musical number.
Yes, a musical number. I wanted to see if I could pull off a musical number in a comic format. To do that, I recruited Julie Wright. She is an amazing artist who is the colorist for The Dreamer as well as one of the creators of Ianua. She rose to the challenge and the art she produced is breathtaking.
The melody I’ve chosen for Blaise’s love song is Auprès de ma Blonde, a traditional French song that dates back to the 18th century. It’s a drinking song that then became a marching song. Leave it to Blaise to make a drinking song into his love song. The most endearing version of this song I could find is by nondepouk on YouTube. It’s fantastically sweet and simple – one man with a guitar, which is how I figure they would have sung it on the frontier.

February 11th, 2013The Midnight Chalice comes to a thrilling conclusion as the chalice ultimately gives the ultimate ultimatum to those with ulterior motives. My thanks to Ricky Bryant for writing, drawing, coloring, and lettering this whimsy for us. He did a fantastic job. Chapter 6 begins on Wednesday. Losing by Winning concludes today with Page 8 of the vignette. Vivienne learns there are consequences to her words and her family’s future is solely in the new world. You know how bad things come in threes. Well, the third thing happened this past weekend while we were at Nekocon. My grandmother passed away on Saturday. She lived to be 93. That’s a long time when I sit and think about it. She was born when Woodrow Wilson was president. She saw her husband sail across the sea to fight in World War II. She ran the family business — a floral shop where the telephone number was 714. Three numbers. That’s it. There were less than a 1,000 phones in the entire town. The years passed and the world changed and in time she was logging onto Skype so she could talk to her great grandchildren.
I need to attend her funeral and say my last goodbyes to her this week. My apologies, but there will not be a page update on Wednesday. I have a piece of art given to us by Rachel at Tangent Artists. It is quite amusing. I’ll ask Diane to upload it on Wednesday. Also, I will try to get a photo album con report up for Nekocon on our Facebook page before I leave.
